Rooftop Friends - Rooftop[0]
Leaning against a pile of junk, you start to sing out of nowhere
Living in a world that looks down on us is such a pain in the ass
But when it's just us, it's like the chains binding me fall away
You don't act like my selfishness is a bother at all
We're just having a casual conversation, there's nothing special about it at all,
But you and the color of the sky make me feel free
The view from up makes me forget how stifling the world can be
(U + I) are defined variables[1][2][3]
We don't need any reason in particular to come here just to talk
If you might be a little late, then I'll wait there for you to arrive
When I was in pain, coming to our secret meeting place
And seeing your smiling face made my days a little bit brighter
Somewhere out there in the wide, pale sky beyond the rooftop
Is my one and only irreplaceable friend
Here, the constraints of social status holding us hostage don't exist
Just a song that doesn't need an answer that connects us[4]
The carefree sound of this rooftop puts our racing hearts at ease
Rooftop, overlooking the maze below-- this fire can't be blown out even by the wind this high up
It's alright to leave everyday troubles down on the ground and reach out for hope instead
The dark cloud of anxiety that surrounds me clears up, because I have a friend here
If I told you that you'd made me stronger,
You wouldn't take me seriously, would you?
Even if the memories get muddled like a hazy mirage,
The familiar smell lingering on the wind still makes me smile
The distorted, unbalanced way it all began surely doesn't matter all that much anymore
Here, among the rusty iron fences and the interlocking ducts,
With you beside me, I feel like I can be myself
The light of the setting sun reflects off of a broken antenna
But you weren't like those other selfish assholes-- you waited here for me
Seated on an oil drum, not even needing to adjust to get comfortable-- where do I even start?
If it weren't for the time I spent here with you, my world would still be suffocatingly small
A place where I'm neither protected nor in danger of being hurt
It was a place where I could just be myself
The carefree sound of this rooftop puts our racing hearts at ease
Rooftop, overlooking the maze below-- this fire can't be blown out even by the wind this high up
It's alright to leave everyday troubles down on the ground and reach out for hope instead
The dark cloud of anxiety that surrounds me clears up, because I have a friend here
The carefree sound of this rooftop puts our racing hearts at ease
Rooftop, overlooking the maze below-- this fire can't be blown out even by the wind this high up
It's alright to leave everyday troubles down on the ground and reach out for hope instead
The dark cloud of anxiety that surrounds me clears up, because I have a friend here
[0] This song is almost definitely an extended reference to 不可思議/wonderboy's Pellicule, which is a song about two friends meeting up after a long time and talking about how they haven't really gone anywhere in life, but they can look back on their memories and hope for the future. Wonderboy was killed in an accident not long after the song released, and there exists a track by his friend and contemporary Mikado that opens the same way and uses the same beat, and the song does much the same, but directed at the now-passed Wonderboy. This is relevant, and, IMO, extremely cool. Wonderboy is also very clearly the inspiration for Shiki's flow in general!
[1] Original line is "you plus one is a finite expression", but I figure this helps translate the pun better
[2] I don't know math for shit so if there's a better way to phrase this let me know
[3] Original line is "有限の式", read "yuugen no shiki", punning on Shiki's name
[4] Original line is "正解のない歌", read "seikai no nai uta", punning on Nayuta's name
